about
After hearing about the Standing Rock protest in North Dakota (US), in Autumn 2016, I felt so miserable and powerless, that I had to sit down and write a song about it.
But after reading all those words that came out as stream on the white paper, I realised my anger was too big to sing them: so I decided to recite them.
I have always admired the world of Spoken Poetry, how a person in a room can galvanise everyone’s attention just by simply “talking”. No big band or orchestra, no fancy melodies and baroques chords, just voice.
But I did not want to give up on the musical aspect, and I tried to still create a “noise\musical” background.
A month after I wrote the song the Obama government agreed to move the pipeline around the holy Native American site. Unfortunately few months after, the new Trump government changed the project once again and went back to the original plan.
I don’t think I wrote my song for what turned out to be a defeat, but now I look at this song as a way to remind myself and everybody else that even one individual can make a difference on the large scale. If we all believe that we have the power to make a difference then we will make a change, no matter how big or small will be, we can all make a change in this world.
After all a majestic forest of oaks, start from nothing but a tiny acorn.
*UPDATE: in 2020 Standing Rock supporters, after years of tribulations, finally won the case to move the pipeline. And I release the song, right in that year, a beautiful coincidence, or a sign (if you believe in it)
lyrics
As long as the grass grows, as long a the water flows
As long as the grass grows, as long a the water flows
As long as the grass grows, as long a the water flows
this land will be yours.
Welcome to Wasteland,
a desolated ground with no description,
a great desire of breathing pure air has become a mere ambition.
Black Mamba has stopped in north Dakota,
‘cause the Sioux still hear the wail of the Earth.
But the Big Brother says “ It’s fine. Environmental crisis is a lie ”
He will make things great again.
Here,
Y’all take a seat and wait for the end.
Man can be as effective as god if there’s no distraction,
but do you really wanna be the weird attraction
at the party, in the corner,
do wanna be the hippie, the vegan, the stoner?
Don’t wait for the commander in chief to take the action,
Be the change! Make your move! Enact your soul’s reflection !
Majestic oaks grow from tiny acorns,
but it takes time, love and mourn,
for an untold truth that we still haven’t learned:
centuries to rise a forest, sparks to burn it down.
_I feel alone but I don't care,
a super hero isn't a spell binder.
And if you are wondering where I am, you’ll find me there, through the wild lavender.
